No one expected rain that day
yet rain is exactly what they got
The businessmen and businesswomen
skirting around in suits and suitpants
Darting from awning to awning
bunching up under newspapers
Concrete, asphalt and black top
are what architects call
"impermeable surfaces"
providing nothing but a transformation
of viaducts into aqueducts
In the country, the rain did not flood
or rage, it was drank deep by the
soil, which despite it's nature
never seems to sate itself
And as the rain soaked into the ground
and down to the water table, it began
to fill in the wells
spotting the damp green hills
The water rose so fast
no one could tell
all the wells were leaking
